Glastonbury 2007 blog
David Braniff-Herbert, Organiser for Youth and Students
Friday 22nd June
As I begin to write this blog a band starts playing in the Leftfield arena, it’s not a band I know but my feet are starting to tap away to the song. Looking out the window I see people watching the band, nodding in time and occasionally making remarks to each other. There’s a sense of calm and discovery in the air, people are listening, watching, speaking about new ideas. This is why we are here, this is Glastonbury.
All morning myself and the Unite Glastonbury crew have been canvassing the public to sign our petition on the minimum wage for young people, it’s been going down really well and the definite consensus out there that having lower levels of minimum wage for 16 – 22 year olds is not on!
Whilst speaking to people about the petition we have been listening to the publics ‘Bad Boss Stories’ – there are some real nasties’ out there! One person told us about being badly burnt at a previous job and the boss not taking them to hospital… It’s awful what’s happening out there but Unite’s going to expose it and stop it, starting with Glastonbury!
This festival really gives us as a Union and a movement the chance to be there when so many people open up to collectivism, Glastonbury’s like that – it’s the coolest place I’ve ever been to, in fact if you look ‘cool’ up in the dictionary you’ll find a picture of two Ravers in a muddy puddle at Glastonbury…
Tomorrow I will report on more bad boss stories as well as a round up of the days organising activities, expect the unexpected and laugh at the drenched.
Until then,
Peace + Love
